"Frankly, Chris, I don't think Congress, particularly not this group of congressmen and women, is smart enough to look through the thousands of pages that I would assume that President Trump's taxes will be", Sanders said on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace.
"If the Radical Left Democrats all of a sudden don't want the Illegal Migrants in their Sanctuary Cities (no more open arms), why should others be expected to take them into their communities", he said in another tweet later on Friday. "The Committee determined that such a request would be an "abuse of authority.' And it will set a 'dangerous precedent by targeting a single individual's confidential tax returns" for political reasons", the Secretary wrote in a response to the request of Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal.
An IRS spokesman said the agency had no comment on the petition of Neal. Trump tweeted Saturday about the plan, claiming, without citing any evidence, that the federal government "has the absolute legal right" to transfer undocumented immigrants into "sanctuary cities" after they legally have to be released from detention.
The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Servicedid not meet House Democrats' deadline to turn over President Trump's past tax returns by Wednesday, escalating what will likely culminate in a legal battle in the investigation into the president's personal and business finances.
"Remember, I got elected last time - the same exact issue", Trump said.
Trump's position has always been that he is under audit and therefore could not release his returns.
