The person who whacked Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali appears to have lured the Gambino crime boss out of his Staten Island home by smashing into the mobster's vehicle, law enforcement sources said Thursday.

Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali, 53, was found with multiple gunshot wounds to his body at his home in the borough's Todt Hill section just after 9pm on Wednesday evening.

Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said police are reviewing surveillance footage that captured the events surrounding Frank Cali's death yesterday in Staten Island.

No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing as police search for a blue pickup truck that fled the gruesome scene after it is believed to have run Cali over.

"The Gambino crime family during Castellano's reign was the largest criminal organization in the USA, with law enforcement estimating it had some 250 "'made" members" and "more than 550 lower-ranking "associate' members".

The New York Daily News stated that a family member called 911 and said Cali was run over before he was shot; one witness told the Daily News, "There were like six shots, and then there were three more".

The reputed boss of New York's Gambino crime family was left riddled with bullets outside his home on Staten Island, an old-school hit akin to the storied executions of 20th Century mafia dons.

Later that year, he pleaded guilty to extortion conspiracy related to the planned construction of a NASCAR speedway on Staten Island - a plan that eventually was scrapped.

The reputed leader of the Gambino crime family - once headed by infamous mobster John Gotti - was gunned down outside his home late Wednesday. He died in 2002 while serving a prison sentence, but he has a brother Gene, who got out of prison six months ago after serving 29 years for dealing heroin.

At the time, it was said that Cali and others allegedly arranged, through force and threat of force, to receive cash payments from someone who had worked on the project.

In 1992, Gotti was convicted in Castellano's murder and a multitude of other crimes. He was succeeded in 2011 by Domenico Cefalu, only to be replaced four years later by Cali.

At a 2008 bail hearing, a prosecutor said Cali was seen "as a man of influence and power by organized crime members in Italy".

Shea said there has been a slight uptick in alleged mob-related violence in NY within the past year.
