It did that and then some. This weekend, Captain Marvel's Brie Larson made a surprise appearance at AMC Clifton Commons theater in New Jersey. With this weekend's results, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now crossed $1 billion in IMAX box office.
The box office bounty gives "Captain Marvel" the biggest opening of 2019 so far and signals a rebound for theater owners, whose sales are down 26% year-to-date.
Captain Marvel doesn't disappoint when it comes to post-credit scenes as there are two to stick around for. That chatter was ridiculous in a lot of ways because that notion was already settled when 2017's Wonder Woman set all kinds of box office records with its release. The highest is last year's "Black Panther", the first Marvel installment featuring a black lead character. The film has opened in most countries except Japan. It brings to life so many aspects of the Marvel Universe while imbuing them with a modern makeover, which grants the film a whole other (and potentially unexpected) kind of salience. The movie will stand behind Black Panther, which opened to $200 million previous year.
"Captain Marvel" landed an A CinemaScore.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part held onto the #4 spot with $3.8 million for a domestic total of $97.1 million, and a worldwide cume of $164.4 million. Males accounted for 55 percent of audiences, while 74 percent of moviegoers were over the age of 25. To combat the down-voting issue in advance of "Captain Marvel", Rotten Tomatoes (which doesn't require users to verify that they've seen a movie that they're scoring) removed the ability to rate movies prior to release. "Captain Marvel" single-handedly chopped nearly 5 percent off that figure with a weekend that overall was up 47 percent from the same past year.
"Parking lot for Captain Marvel 90% empty today".
The total globally is $455 million.
In "Captain Marvel's" case, timing isn't everything, but it certainly does help. It then cuts to a message reminding us that Captain Marvel will return in Avengers: Endgame. 9 of the Top 10 grossing theatres were IMAX locations.
