"Today morning, Pakistan Air Force engaged six targets at the LoC".

Parliamentary leaders on Wednesday will be given an in-camera briefing pertaining to current situation in the wake of Line of Control (LoC)'s violation by Indian fighter jets.

A total of nine airports in India have stopped all flight operations after the IAF carried out strikes on terror bases in Pakistan, said a report in The Indian Express.

The wreckage of one of the jets fell within Azad Jammu and Kashmir while the second fell in occupied Kashmir.

While addressing a press conference an hour after his tweet, Maj Gen Ghafoor said that another pilot has been arrested.

"We will surprise you", said spokesperson of Pakistan's Army adding the response would include all areas including "diplomatic, political and military". He had said earlier that two pilots were captured, but did not explain the discrepancy.

"In this engagement, we have unfortunately lost one MiG 21".

The military said an Indian Air Force plane was downed on the Pakistani side of the Line of Control in Kashmir - a boundary separating the disputed Himalayan region between the nuclear-armed neighbours. They gave no cause for the crash.

The airlines said on Twitter that flights to cities including Amritsar, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Jammu, Leh and Srinagar have been put on hold or temporarily suspended.

The ministry said Wednesday's strikes were aimed at "avoiding human loss and collateral damage".

Several flights from the GCC to Pakistan were cancelled after the country closed its airspace for commercial flights on Wednesday, as tensions with neighbouring India escalated.

The escalation in tensions comes weeks after 44 Indian military personnel were killed in a vehicle bomb attack that was claimed by a Pakistani-based militant group.

The Pakistani jets dropped bombs while returning, officials said. "The Pakistani aircraft was seen by ground forces falling from the sky on the Pakistan side".

"Listen! India this is the Naya Pakistan".

"The Indian Army retaliated for effect and our focused fire resulted in severe destruction to five posts and number of casualties", the spokesman said.

"If that were the case [that Pakistan wanted to escalate], we could have easily engaged the [military] targets, which our air force had locked".

Major General Asif Ghafoor said Pakistani troops on ground captured the Indian pilot.

Earlier Wednesday, India's foreign minister sought to ease the situation by downplaying Tuesday's strike, repeating Indian claims that it had been a pre-emptive attack on JeM.

On Wednesday, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told state-run Pakistan Television he was in touch with his counterparts across the world about the "Indian aggression", adding that New Delhi had endangered peace in the region by Tuesday's airstrike on Pakistan.

Jaish-e-Mohammed militant group was claimed for the attack.

Jaish-e-Mohammed has claimed responsibility for a bombing on February 14 that killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary forces.

The two countries have fought three wars since independence from British colonial rule in 1947 and went to the brink a fourth in 2002 after a Pakistani militant attack on India's parliament.
