Realmuto, with only two years remaining before free agency, rejected a contract extension offer from the Marlins in October, at which point Miami entered into negotiations to trade him.
Sanchez is thought to be the Marlins' prized acquisition in the Realmuto trade.
Reports emerged this morning that momentum was growing between the Phillies and Marlins on a deal to send star catcher J.T. Realmuto to Philadelphia. That could be the first year of a new deal, or the Phillies could sign Realmuto to a new deal that begins in 2019, essentially voiding his arbitration agreement with the Marlins. Cincinnati's Hunter Greene or San Diego's Chris Paddack would have been nice to have if a different deal had been worked out (I was hoping for a package of Francisco Mejia and Adrian Morejon or Paddack from the Padres personally) but Sanchez ranks right up there talent-wise. They effectively replaced Realmuto with a Major League talent at catcher, acquired a top pitching prospect, added some depth, and perhaps most importantly, gave themselves more financial flexibility to chase global talent.
"Bryce Harper loves J.T. Realmuto", Frisaro said on Wednesday evening.
Top Saudi official asks Congress to withhold judgment on Khashoggi
Saudi Arabia has refused to extradite its citizens to Turkey after the country issued arrest warrants for several Saudi officials. As details of the murder surfaced, global outrage against the crown prince - seen as the de facto leader of the kingdom - ensued.
Derek Jeter and his boys just wouldn't relent.
The return of minor league prospects was not enough to overcome the youth of the roster, which is still developing. Still, the team is confident he would be ready for spring training. He becomes the Marlins' top prospect. He and the front office met before Spring Training, discussing options for the upcoming season, asking him to buy into the new plan for the organization.
He was by far the team's most valuable asset and the most marketable face. The team added both Neil Walker and Curtis Granderson recently in low cost/high reward deals that could pan out and help this team win more than 63 games as it did past year.
Realmuto isn't Machado or Harper, but he's certainly another significant addition for the Phils, who this offseason have also added shortstop Jean Segura, outfielder Andrew McCutchen and reliever David Robertson. None were as appealing as Sanchez, as Jeff Passan of ESPN.com wrote. He hit.262 with 10 homers in his first full major league season past year and showed a strong arm, but had 11 errors and 10 passed balls. One of the prospects, 20-year-old RHP Sixto Sanchez, was Philadelphia's top-rated farmhand. Alfaro, 25, is a power-hitting, cannon-armed catcher who will join a young group in Miami. The right-hander authored a 2.51 ERA and 2.66 FIP over eight starts with High-A Clearwater previous year.
