Three people in the Houston area have contracted measles, Harris County Public Health officials said Monday. Unfortunately, it looks like Texas is one of those other states. "They are related. We are still trying to establish if there is some connection with the other cases or if these are independent cases that cropped up at the same time".
So Clark County, Washington (Vancouver) has an outbreak of dozens of cases, one of which is from across the river in Portland.
The Oregon Health Authority said Wednesday that measles was confirmed in the three people Wednesday but that they pose no risk to the public.
Tuesday forecast: Patchy freezing drizzle through tonight
Water and slush that have accumulated due to the current warm temperature are bound to freeze as the cold comes in this evening. Much of the freezing rain and sleet is expected to be northwest of the Boston-Providence corridor, it said.
Beckham said new cases of measles are becoming more common than before, saying the last time they had a confirmed case was a year ago. Infectious disease specialist Dr. Peter Hotez told the Houston Chronicle that measles peaks in late winter early spring, before the measles vaccine became more widespread. In just Washington state, there have been more than 45 confirmed cases of measles this year alone. "It's a very serious disease that can be prevented by vaccination".
Symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed up by flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread down throughout the body. Yet one or two out of every 1,000 children who get measles will die from complications, according to the CDC. Consultants attribute the unfold of measles partially to decrease vaccination charges ensure communities, making extra individuals susceptible to the illness and reducing the extent of herd immunity that protects large teams from changing into infected.
Public health did note some likely immune groups, such as those born before 1957, those who are certain they have already had the disease and those up-to-date on vaccines - one dose for children up to four years old and two doses for those four and older.
