A presentencing memo from Cohen's lawyer, Guy Petrillo, said Cohen had made the statement out of a desire to be loyal and consistent with Trump's wishes to minimize his involvement. "So what if he talked to him about it?"
With this statement by Giuliani (which, who knows, he might contradict by day's end), we now have four different versions that the president and his representatives have told about his pursuit of a Moscow deal during the campaign.
The remarks also came amid fallout from a disputed report by BuzzFeed News that alleged that evidence showed that Trump had personally directed Cohen to lie to Congress about how long talks about the proposed project had overlapped with Trump's campaign for president.
"I don't know if it happened or didn't happen".
The BuzzFeed piece said Cohen lied to Congress about the failed negotiations for a Trump Tower in Moscow at Trump's direction - and it cited two anonymous "federal law enforcement officials involved in an investigation of the matter".
President Donald Trump's legal team communicated with special counsel Robert Mueller's team about BuzzFeed's since-discredited bombshell report alleging that the president told former lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress.
Giuliani said on NBC's "Meet The Press" that Trump recalled having conversations with Cohen about the project throughout 2016, though there "weren't a lot of them".
Defense White Paper Stops Calling N.Korea 'the Enemy'
The last time Mr Kim went to the USA , his letter to Mr Trump appeared to have helped get the Singapore summit back on track. At the request of the North Korean side, the group has chose to postpone the event to February 12-13, it said.
At the time, Cohen told members of Congress that the deal never progressed beyond an initial "letter of intent" and it was halted in January 2016, before the Iowa caucuses.
"The fact of the investigation has nearly insulated Trump because we're all waiting for that final report, the package that's going to tie all these dots together, as opposed to, as you say, reacting to stunning revelations one by one that should be president-ending, term-ending".
Giuliani responded that Trump "answered those questions fully, and I think to the satisfaction of the special counsel".
"The president also remembers - yeah, probably up - could be up to as far as October, November", Giuliani said. "But the president's recollection of them is that the thing had petered out quite a bit".
"The comments by his lawyer (Giuliani) indicated that Mr. Trump's efforts to complete a business deal in Russian Federation waned only after Americans cast ballots in the presidential election".
This was the second time within the past week that Giuliani has walked back comments from the previous day. So anytime during that period they could've talked about it.
"According to the answer that he gave, it would have covered all the way up to - covered up to November, 2016".
After citing Newt Gingrich comparing the media smear job against him to that against Abraham Lincoln, the president specifically called out BuzzFeed again.
